How to install and set up Files.fm Sync on Windows

Files.fm Sync gives you access to your Files.fm cloud files directly in Windows File Explorer. With virtual files enabled, you do not need to download your entire account at once: files appear in the folder, while their contents are downloaded when needed.

This guide explains how to install the app, connect your account and choose which files to keep on your computer for offline use.

1. Download Files.fm Sync

Open the Files.fm Sync download page, select the Windows app and run the downloaded installer.

2. Install the app

1. In the Files.fm Sync Setup Wizard, click Next.
2. Review the installation settings. If you do not need to change them, keep the defaults and click Next.
3. Click Install and wait for installation to complete.
4. Click Finish.

If the installer asks you to restart your computer, save your open documents and click Yes. The app should open automatically after the restart. If it does not, find Files.fm Sync using Windows search or use the desktop shortcut if one was created.

3. Connect your account

In the account setup window, check that the server address is https://webdav.files.fm, then click Next.

The app will open the account sign-in page in your web browser. If this does not happen automatically, use either option:

• Open Browser to open the sign-in page in your browser;
• Copy Link to copy the link and paste it into your browser's address bar.

Sign in to your Files.fm account with your username and password or another available sign-in method. Follow the steps in your browser until you receive confirmation that the account is connected, then return to Files.fm Sync.

4. Set up virtual file synchronization

In the synchronization settings window, review the selected folder on your computer and the virtual file setting. Use virtual files if you do not want to download all your cloud content immediately.

Click Connect to connect the account and start synchronization. During the initial sync, allow the app to load the list of files and folders.

5. Check the synchronization status

Find the Files.fm Sync icon in the Windows taskbar notification area. It may be hidden under the arrow that displays additional icons. Open the app and check its synchronization status: the presence of the icon alone does not mean that all files have finished syncing.

To keep the icon visible, adjust its visibility in Windows Taskbar settings. For quicker access, you can also pin your synchronized folder to Quick access in File Explorer.

6. Keep selected files available offline

With virtual files enabled, a file may appear in File Explorer even though its contents have not been downloaded yet. To keep a file or folder on your computer:

1. Find it in your synchronized folder.
2. Right-click the file or folder.
3. Select Always keep on this device.
4. Wait for the download to finish before disconnecting from the internet.

Downloaded files use disk space on your computer and remain available without an internet connection.

7. Free up disk space

If you no longer need the downloaded copy on your computer, right-click the file or folder in your synchronized folder and select Free up space.

This removes the local copy while keeping the file in your Files.fm cloud storage. You will need an internet connection to download it again. Use this command to free up space rather than deleting the file.

You can now access your Files.fm files in File Explorer and choose which content to keep on your computer and which to leave as virtual files.
