Any user can now open, view and edit Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations directly in your browser with Files.fm.

Works right in the web browser - there is no need to install Microsoft Office or another desktop office suite to make a change to a supported file.

Whether you need to update a proposal, adjust a table or prepare slides for a meeting, you can work with your documents in the same place where you store and share them. Browser editing is available to both free and paid Files.fm accounts.

Which files can you edit?

  • Word (.docx): edit text documents, such as proposals, meeting notes and working drafts.
  • Excel (.xlsx): update spreadsheets and tables, such as project budgets, schedules and lists.
  • PowerPoint (.pptx): open and edit presentations before a meeting or a client call.
  • Additional formats, including Markdown (.md), are also supported.
  • More formats to come soon!

How to get started

  1. Sign in to your Files.fm account and open a supported document from your files.
  2. Action line > Edit
  3. Make your changes in the browser and save them with the editor's Save action.

You do not have to download the document, edit a local copy and upload it again. After saving, you can continue working with the file in Files.fm, get PDF or share it with the people who need it.

To change a shared document, you need editing permission. If someone has shared a file with you for viewing only, opening it does not grant permission to edit its contents.

Useful for everyday tasks

A quick correction before sending a proposal. Open the Word document, update the wording or a date, save the changes and then share the file with your client.

An updated project table. Open the Excel spreadsheet to adjust a budget item or update a task list without moving the file between your cloud storage and a desktop application.

Last-minute presentation changes. Review your PowerPoint slides and update the content before a meeting. Keep the presentation alongside the project's other materials.

Access from a computer, phone or tablet

Browser access makes it easier to work across Windows, macOS and Linux computers. You can also open documents from a phone or tablet. On a smaller screen, viewing and quick changes may be more convenient than longer editing sessions; the experience depends on your device and browser, but it's possible!

For teams: edit a document together

Paid Files.fm users also have access to a collaborative document editor, allowing several people to work in the same document at the same time in their browsers.

This is useful when colleagues prepare a shared proposal, spreadsheet or other working material. Share the document with the intended participants and give them editing permission so that everyone can contribute.
